Clinton and McCain to honor Dr. King in Memphis. Obama to honor him in Indiana.
Senators Clinton and McCain will honor Dr. King in a ceremony which includes laying wreaths at the Lorraine Motel where King was shot. Senator Obama will be honoring Dr. King in his speech in Indiana. Some have wondered about what the political implications of not going to Memphis would be, but others pointed out that Obama is supported by Ted Kennedy and so it’s in someways appropriate that Obama would be where RFK gave a historic speech on the night of King’s death.
Of course, the anniversary has lead to an attempt to politically exploit the legacy of Dr. King by some such as JC Watts. While appearing on MSNBC Mr. Watts shoe-horned John McCain into the discussion and explicitly stated that because Dr. King would be about McCain’s age, Watts believed that Dr. King would support McCain. This stretches credibility given that King was against the pointless war of his time and his final campaign was for the poor. I’m not saying that I know who King would support if he was still alive, but I’m positive it wouldn’t be a man who supports the pointless war of our time and permanent tax cuts for the American aristocracy.
