Senator Barack Obama has become the Democratic Nominee for the President of the United States.

It’s not breaking news at this point by any stretch of the imagination, but Senator Barack Obama has now officially performed what is probably the biggest Democratic upset in 40 years and has defeated the Clinton machine to become the Democratic Party’s nominee for the President of the United States. He crossed the Democratic party’s threshold of 2118 as the people voted in the final Democratic primaries in Montana and South Dakota. His victory is significant not only because it marks the end of a long and contentious primary, but also because it is a landmark moment in American history.

Senator Obama is the first African-American, the first non-European, and the first non-white candidate to become the nominee of one of the two major parties in the history of the United States of America. He overcame one of the finest political machines in American politics, overcame the concept that Senator Clinton was an inevitable nominee, overcame the racism of some Americans, overcame countless groundless attempt to smear him, and he has made history.

Of course, now the real battle will begin as Senator Obama tries to become the first President to be anything other than a white male and will face the GOP’s slime machine, the racism of some Americans, and in all likelihood even more groundless smears.
