Tom DeLay, former Senator, lobbyist, and alleged money launderer told conservative radio host Mike Gallagher that he believes Senator Barack Obama is a Marxist:
“I have said publicly, and I will again, that unless he proves me wrong, he is a Marxist,”
This of course demonstrates DeLay’s complete lack of understanding of just what a Marxist is. A Marxist would want the abolishment of religion while Obama is a committed Christian. A Marxist would explain history through the lens of class while Obama has explained it through the lens of hope, freedom, and equality. A Marxist would call for violent revolution while Obama has called for unity and peaceful reform. It’s clear that DeLay is simply spewing buzzwords to inflame, galvanize, and scare the far-right base.
Of course, Tom DeLay is also likely someone who wouldn’t shirk from spreading the lie that Senator Obama is a Muslim. Both accusations are not only lies, but they are lies which directly contradict each other. Of course, one has to wonder why the words of a man accused of breaking the law carry so much weight with the Republican party.
Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a top adviser to Republican candidate Senator John McCain sent a letter to the National Review which stated that John McCain believes President Bush’s warrantless wiretapping was supported by the constitution:
“neither the administration nor the telecoms need apologize for actions that most people, except for the A.C.L.U. and trial lawyers, understand were constitutional and appropriate in the wake of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001,”
Legal scholars have compared this position to McCain’s earlier beliefs and have come to the conclusion that the Senator has once again contradicted himself. Six months ago, Senator McCain was asked about illegal wiretapping and said:
“There are some areas where the statutes don’t apply, such as in the surveillance of overseas communications. Where they do apply, however, I think that presidents have the obligation to obey and enforce laws that are passed by Congress and signed into law by the president, no matter what the situation is.”
In a follow-up question the reporter asked whether the 1978 federal statute which required federal oversight should be obeyed, the Senator responded:
“I don’t think the president has the right to disobey any law,”
Flip-flopping is nothing new to McCain who has been driven from moderation to extremism to win his party’s nomination(see past posts for details), but this shows that he’s simply unfit to be President given that he seems to be willfully misinterpreting a basic tenant of United States law.
On May 15, President Bush and Senator McCain compared Obama to Nazi appeasers such as Neville Chamberlain due to the fact that Obama is open to negotiating with Iran. If you accept Bush’s definition of appeasement(negotiating with an enemy rather than just saber-rattling and bombing) then you’ll need to expand that list. If Bush and McCain are going to be intellectually consistent with their definition of appeasement, they must come out and denounce not only Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki(who has, but also former President George H.W. Bush who talked Syria into supporting the first Gulf War and Senator Chuck Hagel , a respected Vietnam War veteranwho thinks we should be talking to Syria now. He would also have to denounce the late former President Ronald Reagan who famously traded weapons to Iran for the release of the hostages in what would become known as the Iran-Contra scandal.
