Senate Republicans Show Where Their Loyalties Lay

June 10, 2008

Senate Republicans refused to do anything that the oil companies wouldn’t like. They refused to go along with a Democratic plan to tax the oil companies “unreasonable” profits to lower prices at the gas pump as well as a Democratic plan to extend tax breaks to alternative energy companies. The windfall profits proposal would have:

-imposed a 25 percent tax on profits over what would be determined “reasonable” when compared to profits several years ago, but given them a pass if they invested in alternative energy.

-Required traders to put up more collateral in the energy futures markets and open the way for federal regulation of traders who are based in the United States but use foreign trading platforms. The measures are designed to reduce market speculation.

-Made oil and gas price gouging a federal crime, with stiff penalties of up to $5 million during a presidentially declared energy emergency.

-Authorized the Justice Department to bring charges of price fixing against countries that belong to the OPEC oil cartel.

Once again the GOP shows that they care more about the corporations which fund and control them than the American people. The GOP wrapped their message in false concern for the American people, but they have yet to make any efforts to relieve the American consumer of these outrageous gas prices, so it rings hollow.

McCain’s Economic Plan Appeals To Selfishness. Obama’s Appeals To Reason.

June 10, 2008

Senators McCain and Obama are debating about the economy on the campaign trail. Senator McCain offered a plan which is designed to help the wealthy(thanks to its architect who as outlined previously is partially to blame for the mortgage crisis) but is phrased in a way designed to appeal to the voters’ self-interest:

“You work hard in small businesses to grow and create new jobs and opportunities for others, the federal government shouldn’t make your work any harder.”

However, what McCain doesn’t mention is that he wants to make the Bush tax cuts permanent despite knowing that they were a bad idea at the time they were first proposed and that McCain wants to continue to send $195 million dollars a day overseas to fund a war that was based on a lie.

Obama on the other hand proposed taxcuts for 95% of American workers and the elimination of the capital gains tax to help the average American while rolling back the Bush tax cuts so that the wealthiest 5% have to pay their fair share to help maintain civil society. Obama of course also opposes spending $195 million dollars a day on a war that he never thought should have been authorized. This reduction in spending plus the elimination of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy make his plan far more reasonable.
